Untold points concerning eating vegetables Except for some wrong eating habits such as consuming lots of rice and thus getting fat, we Iranians have good habits as well: for example, taking a lot of vegetables along with our food or eating light meals during the day such as bread, cheese, and vegetables. But of course it is an indispensible part of one’s knowledge to know about the advantages and disadvantages of consuming some vegetables both for those who are interested in consuming them and for those who are not. The delicious, pleasant, and appetizing vegetables are consumed by many Iranians and each vegetable has its own medical properties. At the outset, let’s talk about some common vegetables such as basil, tarragon, summer savory (garden savory), peppermint, and parsley. Thus, we get to the heart of the matter.
The pregnant women should cautiously consume basil! The main properties of each vegetable should first be considered. Vegetables such as basil, peppermint, summer savory and so on have four properties in common: anti-swelling, anti-pain, anti-spasm and anti-microbe. But apart from these common properties, each of them has specific effects. For example, basil belongs to Labiatae (peppermint family), has an anti-oxide effect; accordingly, it is anti-cancer. There are two kinds of basil in terms of color: green and purple. Both have similar effects such as milk-increasing, pacifier, soporific, and anti-Alzheimer. But of course, we should be cautious in consuming basil just in some cases. In the pregnancy period women should not consume basil excessively. A limited amount would be good but if they eat it for a long time excessively, it may be harmful for them.
Do not ignore it! Summer savory is another vegetable worth considering here. This vegetable is a kind of one-year-old grass belonging to Labiatae (peppermint family) which has a strong smell and due to this matter, it is not often consumed when it is fresh but some families consume this kind of grass along with the other vegetables. This grass has a high and strong quality and property of anti-microbe and controls and maintains sweat; therefore, it is prescribed for those who are afflicted with diabetes in order to control their thirst. This plant is anti-cold sore virus (herpes labialis), anti-parasite, and strengthens the stomach and abdomen. As it is said, the summer savory does not have any side-effects and does not cause any harm for human body but if used excessively, because it is a little bit spicy, it may cause inflammation in the mouth.
Peppermint hardly has any side-effects As you know, peppermint is one of the commonly-consumed vegetables and among many kinds of vegetables it is consumed more often than other vegetables. Some of its properties are mentioned here. Peppermint is a kind of plant having many various species. Among the main features of this plant, some of them are anti-vomiting, anti-cold sore virus (herpes labialis), anti-scratching, anti-fever, making your breath more easily, and enhancing and strengthening the health of the body. Another effect is that it is truly anti-pain and pacifier and relieves all pains considerably. Meanwhile, after consuming this vegetable no side-effects or allergies has been reported so far.
Parsley and allergy Parsley is another pleasant and edible vegetable often consumed along with the other vegetables. This plant belongs to the parsley family and decreases the Uric Acid of the body and is well-known for decreasing the blood pressure as well. Thus, it is highly recommended that the middle-aged persons consume this plant very much. Moreover, it is the source of vitamin C and beta-carotene and has mineral materials such as calcium and so on. But because this plant increases the menstruation, women who are pregnant should not consume this plant more than 200 grams a day. If consumed too much, it will be harmful for their babies. The other important matter is that some persons have an allergy to the parsley family. It means that if they consume parsley excessively and expose to the sunlight, some blisters might appear on their skins. Those who have an allergy to this plant should not consume parsley excessively because of this matter.
Avicenna’s idea concerning tarragon Tarragon is the other fragrant and useful vegetable consumed very much along with the other vegetables having a little bit different properties in comparison with other vegetables. This vegetable is a kind of grass belonging to the chicory family. This plant contains some mineral materials such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. This plant like other fragrant vegetables has some properties such as anti-spasm, anti-pain, anti-swelling, anti-microbe, soporific, anti-inflammation, and relieving the pain of the teeth. But some say that in Qanoon, tarragon has weak narcotic powers and maybe the relief of the pain results from this effect. Consuming tarragon is good both for curing the wounds and the inflammation of the mouth and teeth. Thus, we highly recommend you to use tarragon along with the other vegetables.
Concerning consuming vegetables Concerning consuming vegetables and their properties we should say that they are the main source of some vitamins like vitamin C and they are very rich in fiber. One of the best effects of consuming vegetables along with meals is that they shorten the time of passing food stuff through the digestive system which can have two advantages: One is that it cures the disease of constipation, and another advantage is that if we suppose that we consume some cancerous materials along with eating our daily food stuff, they can influence over our bodies. Thus, consuming vegetables shortens the time cycle for food stuff passing through the tube and also the period of the absorption of these cancerous materials. Another advantage of consuming vegetables with one’s food is that they make us feel we are not hungry any longer because they occupy some room in our stomach and do not let it be filled with excessive foods. Thus, the body absorbs fewer calories.And last, no one has any doubts regarding the good effects of vegetables but the important point is how we consume them because washing and cleaning vegetables is very important. And if this process is not performed well, it may cause many serious diseases. Vegetables may be contaminated with many bacteria and parasites due to their inappropriate planting method. Bacteria can be removed and cleaned by washing vegetables with anti-bacterial solutions. One should be very careful about removing the parasites because they are very powerful and resistant. Anyway, it is highly recommended that vegetables be cleaned by some drops of anti-bacterial solutions and be put in the solution for some minutes until you recognize and make sure the bacteria have been removed and killed. Then the vegetables should be quickly washed. It is possible for vegetables to lose their freshness in the washing and cleaning process. Of course, you should wash them as carefully as possible because if the solution remains on the vegetables, it will cause cancer. The best way is that families themselves try to plant various kinds of vegetables so that they will have healthy and fresh vegetables to consume. | ||
