Read Today,Lead Tomorrow
Compiled by: Khalil Khalili Information and knowledge can mean power especially if you apply the right information to help you better your life. But reading is not just about information it can also bring you great enjoyment and laughter which is great for your well-being, while the mystery novels will stimulate your imagination. The benefits of reading are limitless and it is an age old tradition and pastime which will never become dated. Reading helps you to become smarter and intelligent. One of the big advantages of reading a book, magazine or article is it can help you expand spiritually and mentally, it can increase your intellect, improve your focus of concentration thus making you a wiser and interesting person. Other advantages of reading books include: 1. Improve Writing Skills and Expand Vocabulary Experts advise people, and most importantly students, to indulge in at least half an hour of reading a day to expose themselves to numerous styles of writing and to learn new vocabulary. An improved vocabulary is the most obvious outcome of a strongly established habit of reading. When reading, even when we may not understand every new word, we absorb something from the context that may deepen our understanding of it the next time the word is encountered. Our brains work similar to a sponge, they soak up every bit of knowledge we encounter and store it for future use. All successful writers will declare that in order to succeed as a writer, one needs to read, every day. With the aid of an increased vocabulary and imagination, a writer has a better chance at creating an acceptable, if not excellent, piece of written work. 2. Boost Creativity Reading fiction books increase the creativity in the brain, especially at a young age. This is beneficial because creative people are able to solve business problems, write books and music, and create scientific advances that can aid humanity. A creative person doesn’t just create new ideas out of thin air. He takes already existing ideas and cross pollinates them to create something entirely new. By exposing yourself to different ideas in the pages of books, you create a breeding ground in your mind for new ideas to grow. 3. Improve Memory Memory and reading are in close interaction with one another, reading significantly helps improve memory at a young age in life and later on in one’s older years. Poor long-term memory can cause difficulties with reading or reading comprehension. When one reaches a certain age where they no longer have a long-term memory, it becomes exceedingly difficult to successfully read an entire book. This is due to the fact that with poor long-term memory, the reader often does not remem- ber which lines he or she has already read and may find they repeatedly read the same line or page on a book. 4. Develop Analytical Thinking Reading is an indulgence that enhances our knowledge by making us use our brain and causing us to think more and therefore enhancing our intelligence. Since books help improve both memory and concentration, one can say that reading makes it easier to study a subject and retain the knowledge received from the subject, thus directly making someone more knowledgeable. 5. Feed the Mind Our mind like all good computers needs to be fed information to keep it satisfied and stimulated and reading is the best source of input you can feed the brain. Without new information we become stagnant, we are designed to grow and expand we have been doing this since the dawn of time and we will keep on doing it for ever and a day. Reading feeds your hungry mind with an endless supply of knowledge and information which it seeks. 6. Increase Knowledge While almost all information can be picked up on the internet, all the details are not complete. However, you will still need to pick up the book for the details and the fulfillment of getting the hard information and facts from the source. 7. Focus on the Important Things When you develop the habit of reading, you also improve your attitude towards important and less important things in your life. You learn to give up crap for the more useful things. 8. Feed Your Passion When you read books that interest you, it works like the air that ignites the fire in your passion. It keeps the love burning and moving forward to something beneficial. It keeps you from stagnation or complacency. Reading can help you with loneliness or boredom, reading is an ideal way to pass the time away especially on those long journeys or flights. There is nothing better than spending some lazy time on holiday or at weekends relaxing with your head buried in a book where you can tranquilize your mind, so make books your loyal friend and companion. Reading takes our minds off daily troubles; it is also a very good relaxing and calming aid. From the day we are born to the day we die the mind thrives on a good and interesting story. Fiction and story books encourage the use of our imagination and they help us improve our creativity. Many people like to grab a book and just put their feet up and forget all their cares and worries for a while as they experience and enjoy the peace and tranquility gained by switching off and forgetting about the rest of the world. 4. Reduce Stress Ruminating and feeling anxious takes a significant amount of mental effort, believe it or not. It may feel effortless while we’re sulking, but in reality a lot of inert energy is being spent. Don’t you remember being so frustrated with something that you wore yourself out? Sitting down and reading a novel sucks up this negative energy, instead turning it into something useful.
Broaden Perspective No matter how far and wide you travel and how many interesting people you meet, you can never have the breadth of experiences contained within the world’s great books. Through reading, you can experience what’s it’s like to grow up fatherless, sail along with barbarous pirates, fly a plane in World War II, and climb Mt. Everest, all without leaving your armchair. Books help you gain greater insight and empathy than could be mined from your personal life alone. The Day of Books and Reading
